BIOL 302 Rocky Mountain Ecosystems
This BIOL course is a field-intensive experience of the geology, plants, birds, mammals and insects of the northern Rocky Mountain region. Focus is on identification of ecological principles and small group research projects to test understanding of same. Students will also discuss and understand human impacts and the policies driving these impacts with particular attention to water supply and climate change. Accommodations are primarily camping. Students are expected to hike distances of up to 10 miles per day, at elevations up to 14,000ft at temperatures from 20°F to 80°F. A pre-travel fitness test (late April) will determine what level of activities students can participate in, though an equal academic experience will be had by all fitness levels.
Course fee for travel is $1350 including a $150 dollar non-refundable deposit on acceptance. Prerequisites: BIOL 262 or ENVS/SUST 140. Trip Dates: 15 May - 03 June, 2023.

1. May 15 Travel to Grand Canyon National Park, Flagstaff AZ
2. May 16-18 Hike Grand Canyon, Accommodations at Phantom Ranch, GCNP
3. May 19-20 Mesa Verde National Park, Great Sand Dunes NP
4. May 21-27 Salida, CO and Upper N Fork Arkansas River Valley’s with 14,000' peaks
5. May 28 Travel to Yellowstone.
6. May 29 – June 1- Ecology of the Yellowstone Basin (alpine tundra as possible)
7. June 2 Travel to Denver.
8. June 3 Flights from Denver Airport.
